Kenny Davern
Kenny DavernOne of the finest clarinetists in traditional  jazz of the past 30 years (and able to hit notes far above  the normal register), Davern has been an excellent player  since the 1950s. He started playing professionnally when he  was 16 and in 1954 made his recording debut with Jack  Teagarden. He picked up experience playing with Phil  Napoleon''s Memphis Five (1955), Pee Wee Erwin, Wild Bill Davison, Red Allen, Buck Clayton and Jo Jones. Davern led a  band at Nick''s in the early ''60s and was with the Dukes of  Dixieland during 1962-63. After associations with Eddie  Condon, Herman Autrey and Ruby Braff, Davern co-led Soprano  Summit during 1974-79 with Bob Wilber. Up  until that point Davern had doubled on clarinet and soprano but after the group''s breakup he decided to specialize  exclusively on clarinet. He formed the Blue Three (with Dick  Wellstood and Bobby Rosengarden) in the early ''80s, recorded  several fine sets for Music Masters in the 1980s and ''90s and in recent times has had several matchups with  Bob  Wilber in a  new Soprano Summit retitled Soprano Reunion. Smiles was  released in 1999. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
