Bob Oliver
Tain''t Nobody''s Biz-ness
Bob Oliver Home Page
Bob OliverFrom the English Midlands, Bob Oliver's Hot Seven amazingly sounds like an early jazz band - with their well integrated  ensemble. They draw their inspiration, styles and repertoire  from the 1920s, using as sources both black and white bands  from that wonderful period of recorded jazz. Included here  are four tunes associated with Ted Lewis Orchestra as well  as arrangements based on the very obscure records of  'Tain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do and I Just Want A  Daddy I Can Call My Own by Chas A. Matson's Creole  Serenaders. Take a ride back in time - we think you'll  enjoy the bill of fare: the songs are "rare", the  performances are "well done," the "jazz combination" is hot  and tasty.

Reviews:
Although there are no major names on this CD, the music should satisfy any trad jazz collector. Trumpeter Bob Oliver is joined by Dave Taylor on clarinet and tenor, trombonist Christine Woodcock, two banjoists, a sousaphone, Chris Williams on washboard and guest Norman Field on second reed for some numbers; he performs heated versions of many 1920s obscurities. Such tunes as "It's Tight Jim," "Shivery Stomp," "When Jennie Does That Low Down Dance" and "Ham and Eggs" were not exactly recorded on a regular basis in the 1990s. Fortunately, Oliver's band also does not copy the original recordings too closely, so the results are both respectful and inventive within the style. Recommended.

2/9/2007 11:05:46 AM: Bob Oliver's Hot 7 (by Toby Cholmeley)
Came to this late because no MP3 sampler, but a terrific early '20s hot jazz sound, difficult to categorise but with a curiously authentic ring to it, think provincial tent-show meets city theatre-pit. Refreshingly different, they clearly enjoy what they do and do it well. Why no Vol II?
