Barbara Rosene is very special; she combines a sweet voice with a true jazz delivery. And in the tradition of the great jazz singers of the 1920s such as Ruth Etting, Annette Hanshaw and the Boswell Sisters, she surrounds herself with jazz players and gives them lots of room to express themselves in support of rendering these wonderful songs in the most appealing way using jazz phrasing with the melody to the fore always. The moon has held a special place in the hearts of songwriters; Barbara will insure its place in yours....

Reviews: Just Jazz - Feb 2006 - Mike Durham:
This is Barbara Rosene's third album for Stomp Off, and presents us
with a true feast of great tunes, impeccably played by a backing band
composed of New York's finest Classic jazz repertory musicians (drawn
largely from the ranks of Vince Giordano's justly-celebrated
Nighthawks). Miss Rosene herself has an excellent, light voice, true
pitch, perfect diction and an obvious fondness for these delightful
numbers from the great years of American popular song (may God bless
her, she sings the verses too!). Her style is very sympathetic to her
chosen repertoire, and at times evokes memories of the sublime Connie
Boswell, with hints of Annette Hanshaw and Mildred Bailey thrown in
(but don't expect the emotional depths of Billie Holiday, for some
reason somewhat dismissively referred to in an aside in Michael
Steinmann's introductory note). The arrangements, by John Gill, are
sot-on and make full use of the five talented instrumentalists at hand;
they get plenty of chances to play, as Miss Rosene (God bless her
again!) seems more than happy to let them stretch out rather than in
any way hogging the limelight.
While this is obviously a 'theme' album, so many tunes have been
written about our celebrated satelite that a hugh variety of mood and
melody is available, removing any risk of sameness setting in - the
mood runs the gamut from frivolty (Chinese Honeymoon) to wry resignation (The Moon Got In My Eyes).
This is helped by judicious changes in the backing line-up, with just
Craig Ventresco's guitar (echoes of Eddie Lang here) on I Thank You Mr. Moon, guitar and clarinet only on Moonlight Saving Time, piano and cornet only on I Wished On The Moon, and so on - even an instrumental-only performance of Moonlight and Roses.
Recording quality is all we have come to expect of Stomp Off, Peter
Mintun's booklet notes are most informative, and playing time is more
than generous at nearly 80 minutes. My only quible is on the
decision to use the tuba as extensively as it is here: I yield to
no-one in my admiration for Mike Waldbridge's work, I have played with
him in the States, but while the big brass bass is fine on many of the
tunes on the CD, I wonder whether it is really appropriate on some of
the more reflective performances? Anyway, a lot of love and hard work
has obviously gone into this excellent CD, so I would urge you to buy
it and decide for yourself.
Great!!
