A Tribute to Benny Strickler

The inspiration for this season came from a band that played at the Dawn Club in San Francisco in 1942. Led by Benny Strickler, an excellent trumpet player who had just left Bob Wills' Texas Playboys, the band took the place of Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band, most of whose members had been inducted into military service. Strickler's band used two clarinets, one of whom was Bob Helm. So it was only fitting that this tribute recording include Bob Helm as one of the clarinetists (along with Orange Kellin). Versatile Chris Tyle provides a strong cornet lead, economical and early in concept, inspired by and similar in style to the way Strickler played. The tunes are ones that Bob Helm recalls Benny Strickler played at the Dawn Club and, for a different feeling, a few he played with Bob Wills' Texas Playboys. This one is exciting jazz and great fun.
