There was a bright side to the depression-ridden thirties: Many
of America's foremost songwriters were reaching their artistic
peaks. And some of the most memorable performances of their
material were rendered by jazz singers such as Billie Holiday,
Mildred Bailey, Ethel Waters and "Fats" Waller, among others.
Some personal favorites by these and other jazz singers from this
era served as inspiration for this album. "I've Got My
Fingers Crossed" was one of several songs written by Ted Koehler
and Jimmy McHugh for the 1935 20th Century-Fox film King Of
Burlesque starring Warner Baxter and Alice Faye. One of the
highlights of King of Burlesque was the appearance of "Fats"
Waller performing "I've Got My Fingers Crossed." In 1938 "Fats"
Waller recorded composer J.Fred Coots' "There's Honey on the
Moon Tonight," written with lyricists Haven Gillespie and
Bennie Davis. Coots is best remembered for composing the
Christmas standard "Santa Claus is Coming To Town." "I Must Have
That Man" was introduced by Adelaide Hall in the stage
musical Blackbirds of 1928 with lyrics and music by Dorothy
Fields and Jimmy McHugh. A classic performance of "I Must Have
That Man" was made by Teddy Wilson and His Orchestra with Billie
Holiday at a recording session in 1937 which included Benny
Goodman, Lester Young and Buck Clayton. ~ Banu Gibson

Reviews: Banu Gibson ranks at the top of her field, one of the very few creative
singers in the 1990s interpreting music from the 1920s in the older
style without directly copying any of the past greats. There are plenty
of exciting solos on this CD from cornetist Charles Fardella,
trombonist David Sager, the reeds (clarinet, tenor, and alto) of Tom
Fischer, and pianist David Boeddinghaus, while the hot rhythm section
often sounds like Fats Waller's group. Gibson always swings hard and
she has a particularly strong (yet appealing) voice that is quite
versatile. The material is highlighted by "I've Got My Fingers
Crossed," "I Cover the Waterfront," "Ol' Pappy," and "Truckin'," but
each of the 16 selections are quite rewarding. All classic jazz
collectors should be aware of Banu Gibson and this CD (along with Swing
Out 103) features her in prime form.
