Pianist John Sheridan and I had worked out a clockwork-tight
schedule for my breezing into San Antonio and polishing off a
full recording session in a single afternoon. But after finding
the studio empty, and the receptionist telling me she
hadn't seen the engineers in days, John made some phone
calls trying to save the day. As luck had it, we ended up at
'The Landing", the club John plays with Jim Cullum's Jazz
Band. Jim was nice enough to let us use "the Landing" for
the afternoon, and a portable recording system was found and
brought to the club for taping. Problem solved! But the afternoon
had it's own distractions. The bar stayed open to serve the
customers outside on the patio, so taping had to be coordinated
with blender use - to say nothing of the clink of glasses (listen
closely to "You Can't Pull The Wool Over My Eyes"). Normally my
favorite place to perform is in a nightclub, but if it has a
drawback it has to be the 'bar noise'. Of course, it doesn't
matter when you're singing in overdrive and the band is giving
you a run for your money, but trying to sing "The Man I Love"
as a trayful of daiquiris hits the bar has always left me
with mixed feelings of frustration and the giggles. John was
heroic. We took no breaks. We only had until 8:00 when the club
opened. We recorded all afternoon. When we finished I was
exhausted and collapsed to a bar stool looking and feeling like
the local colorful character who always occupies stool number
3 on weekends. John wasn't done, he still had to work all
night. I had always wanted to make piano/vocal albums with both
John Sheridan and David Boeddinghaus. When I found out I wouldn't
have enough material from John's session, and not knowing when he
and I could get together again, my two projects became one.
I called David. Luckily Mike Cogan, who had engineered some
of my past albums was going to be in New Orleans working on
another project, and could fit us into his schedule if I wanted.
I wanted. But time was short. You'd think that knocking off a
side of tunes would be a piece of cake for two people who worked
together every night. But which tunes? We didn't want to dip into
songs slated for our upcoming full band albums. We had to start
fresh. I wanted tunes that would compliment the songs selected for
John's session. We came up with our choices, and the race was on.
Now we had to try to have the new material ready in time for the
recording date. David's session was the opposite of John's. We
had the privacy of the entire studio at Sea-Saint. No real rush
on the time. If we wanted to work something out, or sketch a new
intro or ending, we could. I'm very happy with this album.
I love the songs and I love working with just a piano. It feels
intimate, as if I'm singing just for you. ~ Banu Gibson

Reviews: This is an unusual Banu Gibson CD in that, instead of using her regular
New Orleans Hot Jazz Orchestra, the talented singer is accompanied by
just one of two pianists, John Sheridan or David Boeddinghaus. Gibson's
repertoire on this set includes both classics from the pre-bop era and
obscurities, and the highlights (among many) are "They All Laughed,"
"It's Been So Long," "About a Quarter to Nine," "I've Got a Feelin'
You're Foolin'" and "I'll See You in My Dreams." Arguably the top
classic jazz singer to be active in the 1990s, Banu Gibson's attractive
voice and versatile swinging style are very much in evidence throughout
this excellent outing.
