Independence Hall Jazz Band
Favorites
Independence Hall Jazz Band Home Page
Independence Hall Jazz BandWhose  Favorites? Not yours (not yet!). Surely not jazz  fans, generally (many tunes relatively obscure). Well then, whose? Each member of the Independence Hall Jazz Band selected his personal favorite tune or tunes to include in  this recording or a rather ingenious idea by leader Doug  Finke, we think! Each player was then responsible for making  an "arrangement " of the tune so that the band could record  it. The result of this unique planning is a CD loaded with  very attractive tunes (some standards, some seldom played) performed by a expert musicians whose affection for what is going on shines through, to the enjoyment of the listener.  Join us.

Reviews:
Jazz Journal,   November  2004, Bob  Wair:

This long-established group  of highly proficient specialists in Dixieland and vintage  hot dance music, with Levinson and Tyle sitting-in for a  couple of temporarily absent regulars and Dan Barrett as a  guest, had a bright idea for avoiding the tired trad band  repertoire for their latest CD. Each member was asked to  choose and arrange a couple of his favourite songs. As you can see, this resulted in a pleasantly varied programme  dominated by rarities from the 1920s and 1930s. The sources  are similarly wide-ranging and include a 1931 Billy Cotton  record I Can't Get Mississippi . Jelly Roll's old  Storyville pal Tony Jackson Some Sweet Day as well as  borrowings from theTurk Murphy and Bob Scobey  bands.

Everything is neatly  routined with no two numbers following the same pattern and  even the more familiar material sounding refreshed. Space is left for plenty of short melodic solos of a consistently  high standard. Dan Barrett shines with his other instrument  on I'm Sorry and Limehouse Blues. I hear two  trombones on Fidgety Feet so I suspect that Dan  stayed on to make an uncredited contribution to this one as  well. The five vocals, all charmingly delivered by Tyle and  Levinson, add to the album's appeal (not always the case in  my experience with Dixieland bands).

If you enjoy the sort of  music that Tom Baron puts on every year at his Blackpool  Jazz Party, this CD will make you very happy.

Just Jazz,   May 2004,  Peter  Lay:

This CD is the fourth  production by the Independence Hall Jazz Band, a band led by  trombonist Doug Finke. Their previous three CDs have all  been favourably reviewed by this magazine, and having  listened to the latest quite a few times already, there is  no reason to argue with the previous comments made about  this band. Although on this occasion the band is missing  their regular drummer, banjoist, and clarinettist, they are  replaced with some excellent musicians - Scott Anthony  (banjo), Dan Levinson (reeds), and my good friend Chris  Tyle, 'veteran jazzman' as they call him in the sleeve notes  (and he is only 49 this month), on drums. Chris also features on his first instrument, cornet, and on clarinet.  With the aid of double-tracking he plays drums on all  tracks. Leader Doug Finke, a fine trombonist, allowed the  musicians to pick the tunes for the recording session, and  therefore you will find a very wide area of tastes covered  in the selections, with some great jazz standards, to  lesser-known Hoagy Carmichael tunes. The added bonus of Dan  Barrett on cornet to aid and abet his mate Jon-Erik Kellso  (trumpet) makes this a highly recommended CD, and I look  forward to their next release.
